How to Cleanse Your Home

It’s time for spring cleaning, and for many that means scouring floors and baseboards, cleaning out closets, and doing some often neglected down-and-dirty cleaning. While you are working on making your home squeaky clean, take a moment to ponder if it is spiritually clean. You can scrub, wipe, and scour away as much dirt as you want, but if you neglect this area, your home won’t ever be the sanctuary you desire. This post will discuss reasons for cleansing, indicators that it is needed as well as how to cleanse your home.

Indicators that your house needs cleansing

The Bible clearly states that demons and evil spirits interfere in our lives. These forces influence our minds, cause sickness and undesirable behavior, impair our ability to function normally, and cause distrust and unrest.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against wickedness in high placesEphesians 6:1”

When something evil is at work, sometimes you just know. You may have a specific word from the Lord or a strong sense of unease. However, for most people it is not always that obvious. Here are some common indicators it’s time to cleanse your home.

Nightmares and night terrors

Nightmares are inspired by demons. They are almost always an indicator that something needs to go. I remember one time I had the most vivid nightmare. The next morning, my teenage daughter described her own nightmare that was practically identical to mine. Freaky stuff, and we knew we needed to take care of it.

Frequent bickering or disharmony among family members

Demons in your home thrive on creating strife and conflict. If you notice a lot of arguing among family members or everyone just feels out of sync, it’s time to clean!

Unexplained “strange” animal behavior

This includes dogs or other animals fighting, a pet that seems “spooked” in a certain room for no obvious reason, or other unusual behavior. One time, our horse was freaking out for about 3 days before a friend suggested I might need to cleanse my property. That was my first ever experience with cleansing, and I was amazed at the difference it made…not just for the horse, but for everyone in my family as well!

Forgetfulness, losing things, breaking things, etc.

There are some weeks when it seems like everyone is misplacing things. Or I constantly walk into a room and forget why. How about those times when all at once the TV remote stops working, the dryer goes out, and you drop and break 2 dishes? This can be a spiritual force at work. Remember, the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Stealing our time is a prime way the enemy likes to take from us.

Eery feelings

Have you ever walked into a building and had an immediate sense of unease? Maybe it even made the hairs on your neck stand up. Are there certain areas of your home or property that always feel a bit “off”?

Sickness

Sickness is not always a sign of demonic forces in your home, but it can be an indicator.

What is cleansing?

In a nutshell, cleansing is the removal of undesirable spiritual influences. Cleansing your house is crucial because evil forces will take up residence anywhere a door has been opened to them. If you have never cleansed your home, there’s a very good chance it needs it whether or not you notice any of the indicators.

The thing to understand is you have authority over your home and property. The demons don’t have permission to take up residence there unless someone or something gives them permission (an open door). And getting rid of them is as simple as taking care of whatever it is that grants them permission (closing the open doors) and telling them to leave.

One important note is to evaluate what may be in your home from the previous owners or even guests. Anyone or anything that has ever lived or stayed in your home brings their spiritual “junk” with them. So even if you can’t identify any obvious open doors, there’s a good chance something or someone has let them in at one time or another.

Read on for steps to cleanse your home. At the end of this post is a sample script you can use.

A note about hotel rooms or other temporary lodging

You can be certain that there are numerous open doors in hotel rooms and other places where travelers come and go. I used to feel a bit fearful and have the hardest time sleeping in hotels. Now I just do a quick cleanse of the room when I arrive, and I sleep soundly when I travel. You can easily adapt the script below for places you lodge.

Step 1: Closing the Doors

When you begin to cleanse, take a walk through your house. Pray as you go and ask the Lord to open your eyes to anything sinful in nature. You may have seemingly benign objects that celebrate or inspire sinful thoughts or actions. Some key things to evaluate closely:

• Movie collections or other sources: cable TV, Netflix, etc.
• CDs or other music collections
• Magazines
• Video games
• Books
• Pictures or paintings with evil or idolatry images
• Jewelry, especially with dark symbols like skulls, etc.
• Cultural art that may contain religious symbols
• Furnishings that may have been used for unholy acts

As you remove any items, you are essentially revoking permission for any demon associated with these items to be there. Take away the permission, and they have to go when you tell them.

Step 2: Use Your Authority as you Anoint

After you’ve cleared out sinful items and closed the doors in your home, it’s time to take authority. This is simply verbally (out loud) commanding every evil spirit to leave to leave your home and property in Jesus’ name.

"at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth…Philippians 2:10"

All power in Heaven and earth is in the name of Jesus. When you command evil spirits to leave in the name of Jesus, they have to go. This is so much simpler than most people make it. You simply stand in your home and tell everything unholy that it is time to go! Remember this is not a prayer – you don’t pray to demons and evil spirits; you command them. They can’t hear your thoughts either (thank goodness); so you must make your declarations out loud. There is a sample script at the end of this blog, but no fancy words are needed.

I like to anoint my home when I cleanse.

"And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.Isaiah 10:27"

Walk through your home reciting the command in each room while dabbing a bit of oil on the frame of every door and window frame. Do this by faith, believing and receiving God’s supernatural protection over your home and family. The oil you use is not important; it’s the intent that really matters. I typically use hyssop, frankincense, or sometimes a wonderful blend called Harmony. But if you don’t have any essential oils, plain old olive oil will do the trick.

You may feel a difference before you even finish anointing and commanding. But don’t stop. Be sure you go through each and every room of your home.

Let’s clear one thing up.

A common misconception is that you have to be a Christian to have authority over the kingdom of darkness. But the Bible tells us that God made man in His own image to rule “over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Genesis 1:26). It does not qualify that the man has to be a believer. Because we were created in His image, all humans have authority over every living creature, in the natural realm as well as the spiritual realm.

"You have put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him.Hebrews 2:8"

The bottom line is, you have authority over your property, and you can take control and remove any unwanted entities.

The Power in His Name

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s not overlook one more important verse.

"When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order.Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.Luke 11: 24-25"

This verse speaks specifically to the dangers of casting demons out of a person who is not filled with the Holy Spirit. So while a non-believer absolutely has dominion over his/her home, they may need to do more maintenance and cleansing to keep it up.

Step 3: Protecting Your Home

If you are a believer, the Holy Spirit already resides in you and in your home. This step involves thanking Him for His presence and His protection. It’s a way of sealing what you accomplished and asking for His protection over your property. Ask Him to appoint angels to watch over and protect your home and family. (Again, the script at the end will guide you through this process.)

Step 4: Take it Outside

If this is your first time cleansing, or if you feel a real need to cleanse your home, don’t stop with the interior of your house. Go outside and walk the perimeter of your property reciting the script. You may even want to bring your anointing oil with you and anoint the corners of your property while you are at it. If you have close neighbors, choose a time when your neighbors aren’t outside because this needs to be done out loud and with authority.

If you live in a shared property like an apartment complex, you can still do this. Find a time when no one is around and walk the perimeter.

The Cleansing Script

Feel free to use this script or modify it as you wish.

Dear God,
I believe and trust that You alone have all power and authority in Heaven and Earth. I come to you asking for the spiritual cleansing of this place, for it to become a safe Christian environment for me and my family.

In the Name, Power and Authority of Jesus Christ, I renounce and reject:

• Any sins that have been committed here by anyone.
• Sinful items ever kept here.
• Sinful things that have been broadcast here.
• Evil or sinful people who have ever lived or entered here.
• Any satanic claim attempts on this place.

I command every evil spirit in this house or on this property to be bound and rebuked away by the power of the Holy Spirit and never return! I command you to go immediately to the feet of Jesus and await His orders. Any evil assignment against my home or my family is herby canceled and rebuked by the power of Jesus.

Therefore, I claim this place as a place of spiritual safety and protection. I proclaim a circle of refuge around my property that is not to be broken.

Father God, please secure Your blessing and spiritual protection over my home and property. Thank You that Your Holy Spirit dwells among us. Please send angels to watch over me and my family and our home. Let Your angels surround our home and property. Let them protect this place and prevent any evil thing from entering here. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
